Following last week’s government announcement on changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) residence policy, more details have now been released.
The Government is placing greater value on New Zealand qualifications in the points system, making it easier for skilled migrants and international graduates to qualify for residence. These changes are set to take effect in August 2026 as part of the Government’s broader Going for Growth programme.
Skilled migrant category changes
The criteria to claim points under the current policy will change, to make it easier for people to qualify. Changes will be made to how points are awarded, as well as the wage requirement.
With the two new pathways to be introduced, the Skilled Work Experience Pathway and the Trades & Technicians Pathway, a Red List and Amber List will also be released.
Why this matters for employers
These changes make the SMC more accessible for:
- International graduates planning to stay long-term
- Migrants with high-quality qualifications earned locally or
- overseas tradespeople and technicians who otherwise do not have a pathway
